'They were figuring out the arrangement and I was jamming along. They were actually recording it but I think they were going to go start from scratch again,' Wheeler said.

'There was one little guitar lick I was playing that I think Chris was quite excited about. I think they can slot that in. There's got to be a chance!'

Coldplay's 'metal band' move forward to songwriting

Coldplay comprising of Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Jonny Buckland have been progressing towards new songs "as though they are a metal band".

Coldplay is currently working on their fifth studio album and love experimenting with playing them in different ways, with often surprising results.

Their Roadie #42 blog explained: "Chris suggests playing a gorgeous melody as though they are a metal band. The first stab at this is predictably (and intentionally) comedic.

"They pursue it though, playing one section over and over in a loop, varying the dynamic from pin drop quiet to aggressive and bolshy. They move through the transitions as one unit, as though someone is pressing their foot smoothly on some huge gas pedal somewhere."

The 'Fix you' hitmakers has invited Ash frontman Tim to work on an as-yet unnamed track.

Coldplay recording with Ash frontman

Coldplay have been working with Ash frontman Tim Wheeler.

For the 'Viva La Vida' Coldplay band's new album,Northern Irish rocker Tim was invited to sessions by singer Chris Martin.

Martin says that he is a big fan of vocal melodies Tim writes.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Chris has always had a soft spot for Ash. They were quite close in the early days and have shared a number of bills over the years.

"He admires Tim as a songwriter, especially his brilliant way with melodies, so he didn't think twice about asking him to get involved."

He said: "We've narrowed it down to 15 tracks. I'm trying to make sure there are three songs that start with the same letter. On the last album it was 'L'. It might be 'U' this time.

"One of them is 'Up With The Birds'. It might be a duet, but we don't know who with yet. The other two might change."
